‍"HER SET, HER SOUND" | MEET a few of the talented DJ's that make up the "HER SET, HER SOUND MUSIC FESTIVAL"

We are SO excited about this music festival, how did it come about?

‍

HI! I am Robyn Jordan, a fervent facilitator, who planted myself in Northwest Arkansas 10 years ago and have grown with it since then. As a Saint Louis native and a graduate from the University of Arkansas, I have always admired the vast development and growing potential in NWA. My mission is to organize and forge opportunities for those who are underrepresented, especially those in the creative arts and entertainment community in Arkansas. The first annual Her Set Her Sound showcase and festival emerged in my mind while I was writing a story for the Arkansas Soul, highlighting BIPOC women who are DJs and MCs in the NWA region. Now this summer, I’ll be hosting this event for the same group of women who can fill a room, play a tune, and set a vibe!

Seven NWA women DJs/Fem-cees will each play a set appealing to a wide audience. The purpose of this event is to amplify the tenacious and the visionary, and to empower those who are underrepresented in Northwest Arkansas through movement and music. This fresh and festive experience will not only boost exposure for the performers, supportive businesses and organizations, and feature vendors that are minority-owned businesses in the region, but will also increase a sense of belonging and engage the community to support underserved creatives and entrepreneurs alike. - Robyn Jordan

‍DOMINIQUE WASHINGTON ( DJ Dribblz )

What did you want to be when you were a child, and what would your younger self think of you now?

‍

Great reflection question I can remember always saying I wanted to be an entrepreneur and at the time didn't really know what that meant and what it entailed outside of me being my own boss. Coming full circle with me now being a DJ and most recently adding Real Estate Investor to my title gives me the ability to do so.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

‍

Favorite part of DJing is taking my vision with music and allowing people to experience/hear it in and a way maybe they would've before.

What is your best advice to someone just starting out?

‍

DJ DRIBBLZ is a self-taught DJ and former UA Hooper from Pensacola, FL . With an instrumental background using snare drums and piano and niche for playlist making, Dribblz started mixing in 2019. Playing and producing music are activities she believes she can always grow in. She enjoys blending hip-hop, R&B, and reggae genres to make sure her audience enjoys the moment. ​Twenty-five years behind the turntables mastering the art of the mix. Lover of reggae mixed with punk and hip-hop funk, Houston native DJ Soulfree has dj'd raves and clubs like Power Tools, Fitzgeralds, Rockefellers, Club Some, Blue Iguana, Club Waxx and more. From operating her own indie record Starlight Beats & Breaks, and opening a publishing company called Soul Breaks Publishing, Soulfree is all about uniting people through music.

ASHLEY WORTHEY ( DJ GirlFriend )

What is your best advice to someone just starting out?

EVELYN SOSA ( DJ Vlyn )

What did you want to be when you were a child, and what would your younger self think of you now?
‍

When I was little I wanted to be an artist. I think younger me would be proud to see that not only am I making my own art and being featured in a gallery, but I am also designing merch for artists, promo for events, I am a curator, a Dj, and a director of art and culture programming for non-profit! I am super happy with where I am today and cant wait to see where I go in the next 5 years. - DJ Vlyn

Evelyn Sosa, also known as "VLYN," is a 29-year-old Latinx creative, DJ, and community organizer living in Fayetteville, AR. They have been DJing since 2019 and has made appearances at West & Watson playing with the Bass Vibes crew since the summer of 2020.  They have also performed at events curated by Ozark 808. Their taste in music is influenced by the underground bass music scene and the sounds of labels such as Overview, Inspected, Dividid, Slugwife, and YUKU. RAQUEL THOMPSON ( DJ Raquel )

‍What did you want to be when you were a child, and what would your younger self think of you now?

‍

When I was about 4 or 5, I desperately wanted to be a Dolphin Trainer. This was because my family and I went to the zoo a lot when I was little, and one of my favorite things to do there was going to the 'Dolphin Show' and watch trainers play with dolphins. Dolphins easily became my favorite animal after that, and I remember wanting to be as happy and free as those trainers looked while playing with cute animals for a living. As I got older, I began to want to do stuff like acting, singing, or playing in a band. All I knew is that I wanted to do something that was a result of my pure desire and joy to do it, not because I had to. Once DJing came along (when I was about 11), I finally found that job, but when I was in middle school, I was the only kid who had their own business (let alone one that required me to perform in front of people) and sometimes, people made fun of me for it or made me feel weird about it. When I told adults what I did, they always brushed it off as a hobby and asked what I really wanted to do when I got older. I used to be super embarrassed to tell people I was a DJ, because it always seemed people thought it could never be something that I could do as a "real" job. As I got older, I began to tune doubters out and listen to those who supported me. Music is something I do, but it's also who I am. DJing is a sanctuary for me, and I've realized that what I do can also provide a sanctuary for the people I play for, so I'm not ashamed, but overwhelmingly grateful I get to do what I love. So, I think little Raquel would be really happy and proud to see where I am today because I reached my "Dolphin Trainer" dream, only it's with music ( haha). - DJ Raquel

DJ RAQUEL grew up immersed in music and has been dj-ing since 11-years old. Player of all types of music and lover of house and EDM, she admires the power music has to bring people together. While mixing genres and driving dance beats, she delivers a smooth, steady rhythm with the technical prowess of DJs with much more experience. Raquel is a future 2023 graduate from the Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas. D'Lite Xiong ( DJ D'Lite )

In moments of self-doubt, hardships or failure, how do you build yourself back up?

‍

‍My sun sign is in Virgo therefore I can be very critical/hard on myself when making a mistake. Usually how I get myself out of these pits of self doubt I rely on my friends and family to hype me up and remind me of all of my achievements. I have a very loyal fan base who show up to my gigs to lift me up in my moments of despair, wouldn't be here without them. - DJ D'Lite

DJ D'LITE is a first generation Hmong-American from Seattle, who mixed her computer science experience with her admiration for music. As a lover of EDM, 90's music and hip-hop, D'Lite turned her DJing hobby into a career in 2018. Considering herself an audio engineer, she aims to be more than the "sound guy" at her events.  D'Lite hopes to move a generation with her MC skills.
